You’ve Got Options
I am currently working on a project that involves several optional window treatments to cover motorized roller shades over sliding glass doors and windows.
I love using motorized shades because they are custom fit with a modern, clean aesthetic. They provide practical UV protection, energy cost savings, and come in so many fabric options.
Roller shades come installed with a sleek matching valence. However, in some rooms, it feels more appropriate to also add either a custom cornice or valence to hide the shades completely. What is the difference between a cornice and a valence?
Cornices and valences are window treatments that adorn the top of a window to add color, interest and a custom element to coordinate with other features in a room. A valance is a flowy, unstructured drapery treatment made from fabric and a cornice is a hard, wood-backed treatment that is then covered in fabric.
In the family room shown here, we added a new game table with a fantastic fabric on the chairs. That textured square fabric was ideally carried over to the squared off cornices that cover the windows. Would you believe that one of those cornices is 12 feet long?! Particularly in a room with so much wood, a cornice was the perfect detail to add structured softness and color with the convenience of motorized shades.
So when deciding between a cornice, a valence or roller shades alone, my new project will have one of each! But with the lake outside those windows, there is no wrong way to #enjoyyourview.
