Happy Birthday, Dad
My dad’s birthday is this week and this Wednesday was the first time I have seen his gravestone. So today, in honor of my dad, I am going to talk about wallpaper and wood.
At a young age, he learned to hang wallpaper professionally, working with his dad and uncle for the Ryskamp Brothers Wallpaper Hanging/Decorating business.
I think my dad would appreciate the risk we took to paper the ceiling in this space. That risk paid off! The added texture makes the room feel cozy, without feeling small. This unexpected detail draws your eyes up, while the branches provide a literal canopy that matches and balances the deep blue on the walls, as well as the tree branches outside.
Then, take a look the “before” picture to note the unbelievable difference the faux beam makes! The dark wood tone is the perfect compliment to the wallpaper and repeated in other wood accents in the room. Sawdust will always remind me of my dad. He was such a fan of natural wood and was literally working on carpentry projects around his home until he died.
This week my mom gave me my dad’s old tape measure. I may not ever really measure up, but I think my dad would be proud of what I am creating.
